I turned to step change in 2020 my marriage had broken down , and I was left with a lot of debts so I owed about 16000, at the time, iv been able to put all my debts as one payment, so far iv payed just over 6,000 pounds in the last 5 years I'm glad I did turn to step change, they have helped me sort out my debts and now iv been able to sleep at night Reviewed on: 24th May 2025

I was in a very dark place and swamped with debt .

I was in a very dark place and swamped with debt .I tried talking to my bank but the experience was very negative and I felt humiliated and distraught.A family member persuaded me to approach , step change which I felt at the time would make me feel like a total failure .how wrong I was the experience was really easy and I spoke to staff who were totally helpful.non judgemental ,friendly and understanding .The sense of relief I felt knowing there was a way to survive was beyond my dreams .I took on a debt management plan that was affordable and gave me back control.i could live with a realistic budget. I only have 8 more payments until I am debt free .I cannot rate steochange highly enough they literally saved my life .things had got that bad Reviewed on: 1st May 2024

Help in dark times

StepChange is the sort of organisation that one goes to at what is usually one of the worst times in a person's life, when it feels like your world is crashing down around you. It takes courage to approach them, but they reward that courage with compassion. They look at your circumstances objectively and non-judgementally, and tend to help you arrive at a way forward. The world is a less scary place once you are with them, and although it can take a long time, after a while you start to see a possible future that doesn't involve loss and abject poverty. I got into a debt management program with step change 6 years ago, after turning my life around from active addiction. Step Change has really helped me in continuing to pay off my debts.
