Review of the BUPA, Health insurance:

WORST INSURANCE COMPANY I'VE EVER USED. PLEASE TAKE YOUR BUSINESS ELSEWHERE!

1
I am honestly so utterly disgusted with BUPA, the way they have treated me and the absolute lies they have told me. I am 49 and have been with BUPA for a large part of my life through private and company policies and chose to stay with them when moving from a company to private policy in April as they offered a continuation policy (apparently!!) I was quoted approx £80 per month and having had around 10 brain operations I thought was very reasonable. I was then asked if I had had any issues with my back such as arthritis and whilst I hadn't, I explained that I had fallen over on an icy travellator a few years ago and had 2 lots of injections in my back (which didn't work) and some physio but that there was no further treatment that I could have nor would be able to have (I had written proof of this) as I had been left with chronic pain and not a back condition. Bupa do not cover treatment for Chronic Pain but despite this they loaded my premium by 150% from £80 per month to over £200 per month, purely because of my back pain and told me that it would not be reduced again at any point, even though they could see that I was not and could not claim anything for it and that it would increase further every year with age etc I asked them to exclude my back if they were happier doing so, although I did not really see why it was necessary, but they refused, and despite there being recordings and written proof that the loadings were solely because of the fall and not my brain ops (the brain condition has now been cured), they then lied and started suggesting that it was to do with the brain ops after all to justify the huge increase. They also said that I was told it could be changed within the first 21 days of cover and they could have looked at excluding it, another lie as I was never told that. I pointed out that they had already told me it was not to do with my brain and I asked for an explanation as to why the loading was so huge. They then told me they don't have to explain that to me and if I wasn't happy I could seek cover elsewhere, which will obviously leave me with no cover for anything that is considered pre existing, such as any treatment relating to my brain should I ever need it again. This is only a snapshot of what has happened and the way that I have been treated by them but I can honestly say I have never been treated with such total indifference and lack of compassion by a company before. They have absolutely stitched me up and taken an additional £1500 from me this year for something that they themselves admit they do not even cover. I would urge you to go elsewhere for cover. My family are now cancelling their policies too and I will never ever recommend BUPA to anyone, indeed I would urge anyone looking for cover to take their business elsewhere. Took my money yet I can't deal with account!

1
BUPA were more than happy to take my money for overseas visitor (visa 600) cover that the govt deems necessary, however they FAILED to tell me it dod NOT include repatriation. Further to this once I had paid for the insurance for my visitor, who does not reside in australia (obviously) and does not speak English, I was no longer permitted to deal with the multiple issues that arose as they became more and more specific about what information they required. VERY FRUSTRATING AND EXPENSIVE EXPERIENCE. Go with someone else!! Reviewed on: 17th April 2025

If I could give zero stars, I would.

If I could give zero stars, I would. Bupa has been charging me TWICE every month — not once, but two times — and apparently sees no issue with it. When I tried to get my money back, they promised a refund, but instead of a proper electronic refund (like literally every other business in the world), they insisted on sending a paper check. Welcome to the 1980s. It’s been over 3 weeks, and surprise: the check never arrived. This has happened more than once, and every time I reach out, I’m met with radio silence. No follow-up. No escalation. No refund. No one seems to give a single damn. The support is useless, the process is broken, and the attitude is basically: “We’ve got your money, now go away.” Honestly, it feels like I’ve been scammed by a company that pretends to be professional but can’t even handle basic billing or communication. Do yourself a favor — stay far away from Bupa. Once they’ve got your money, they’ll disappear. And if something goes wrong? Good luck ever getting it back. Reviewed on: 14th April 2025

Impossible to cancel policy which I had to take as a visitor on a Visa when going to Australia. Can't cancel via online account, can't cancel via chat, can't cancel via mobile app, reaching them with a call almost impossible, have to wait on a line for 45min +....... So to put it shortly, absolutely customer unfriendly! Reviewed on: 11th April 2025

OUTRAGEOUS INCREASES

My wife and I have been with BUPA for over 20 years.10 years ago our premium was £120 per month.Today the premium for 2025 is £1400 per month. I expected as we get older (73 and 71) that we will pay more but this is outrageous. If the same percentage increase is applied then in 10 years (You can do the maths) Reviewed on: 3rd January 2025

Taking their time for pre-authorisation

1
On the 09th of December i requested a pre-authorisation to see a nephrologist. My GP was concerned about dropping Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR). Blood test that measures how well your kidneys are filtering your blood. He said to be safe he will refer me to a specialist. Kidneys is not something mess round with. I requested and online pre-authorisation from Bupa. They emailed me with non related questions seeing that the GP already gave a referral letter. I feel people asking these question must be medically trained. And I called Monday and still Bupa cant give me authorisation number yet or tell me when they will give me one. I feel this is playing with my health, and i am paying for private medical insurance for a reason. Same happened with my Wife and she got fed-up and went through the NHS route. She was assisted faster by the NHS before Bupa even had given her help. I am not happy with this low level of service Bupa offers. I feel this is unprofessional and terrible client service as this is quite serious to me. Reviewed on: 18th December 2024

BUPA should be investigated

I have a BUPA policy through my employer and was told by the agent that the treatment I had medically been assessed as requiring was covered by our policy but they were not going to authorise it due to the account team deciding so, even though the BUPA medical team saying it was covered. Complete scam. He advised me to make a formal complaint Reviewed on: 4th December 2024

Bupa UK Insurance Add photo Your review is pending.Read more Homespun Andco 9 reviews GB Rated 1 out of 5 stars Not an easy straight farward medical insurance Had nothing but issues from the day I was covered. Trying to get seen by a specialist is like trying to see the Queen and the advisers on the phone is like speaking to school children I'm sure their uneducated in this field because I go round and round in circles with what I need to do. I wanted my 2 children reared for different reasons 4 weeks ago and still no further farward. Ask me to do so many different thing before they can get them sorted it's so confusing for a first timer here at bupa. Also my 4 month old hasn't got a passport so they have to verify it's him and me at the same time on video call every single time he needs an appointment how ridiculous is that. I'm on his birth certificate and I've verified my self surely this is all they need to verify him the once. Honest what a waste of time and money. The NHS are by far better. Always thankfull for the NHS and I don't pay them! What's the point in private medical insurance. Reviewed on: 19th November 2024
