The Co-operative Bank Current account reviews (401)

Review of the The Co-operative Bank, Current account:

Incompetent,uncaring,bureaucratic cretins

1
Having spent the best part of two months trying to open a simple current account with no credit or borrowing facilities, as a non resident of the UK ,I can safely state that the Coop Bank is the worst bank I have ever had the misfortune of wasting my time trying to deal with. The bank advertise current accounts for non residents on the internet making the claim that the procedure to open an account is simple.Once the process starts, only then are the mindless cretins in the bank's so-called security and vetting department in Skelmersdale revealed. The documentation demands from the aforementioned department go far beyond supplying a copy of one's paasport and copy proof of a residential address. No, the bank must have either "certified" copies or original documents.Bearing in mind that the person ,in this case, is applying from outside the country it is impossible to pop along to a branch in the UK and show original documentation.Certification means a written statement on the copy documentation from a notary public or the like ,which is not only an expensive exercise in the country where I am resident as well as being impossible during a lockdown.Correspondence from Skelmersdale to the Netherlands took three full weeks to arrive .One letter said that if I did not reply within 28 days my application would be rejected.I managed to reply within 28 days using expensive couriered post.To no avail -we must have certified documentation.Remember,I was trying to deposit money with this bank not borrow from them.I complained.I receieved an email telling me my complaint had been dealt with. Two weeks after that, again with a three week delay I received a letter telling me my complaint about lousy service, uncontactable telephone numbers and postal delays was not the fault of the bank but the peopkle delivering the letters and the Covid crisis. In short don't touch this bank with the proverbial barge pole. The whole organisation ,including the management and complaints team based in Manchester are totally useless and not fit for purpose. Very good rewards system for an active current account.

Very good rewards system for an active current account. The account was easy to set up online and having a couple o direct debits and using the debit card actively activates monthly rewards which paid better than a lot of current account interest rates. Reviewed on: 6th February 2025

Co-op are quick, honest and help in times of need!

5
Co-op are a very honest bank! They always get back to you fast with your queries, and they are very good at helping if you've ever been scammed! Saving interest rates aren't very high but then they make ethical investments which lead to lower AER which I think are worth it. They have one of the best package accounts "Everyday extra" which offers really good cover for you and your kids (up to 22 years old!) Reviewed on: 4th February 2025

Not a lot positive about Co-op bank

2
The only positive thing about Co-op bank is the fact that it's a lot more ethical than other banks. However, the switch process is extremely slow and takes a lot more effort than it's worth. The app is lacking in a lot of functionality compared to other banks apps. On top of that customer service is limited and it seems as though it's a bank that's stuck in the 90's. 7% savings account with a £0 balance

2
Opened new current account via Switch. All went smoothly. 7% savings account attached and dd set up. DD didn't leave account in the morning (as do all DDs right?), so manually transferred. Then the DD payment was sent mid morning, so I withdrew the £250 from the savings account, as I'd sent 2 x £250 to the savings account, they also withdrew £250. Balance now £0. You can only put £250 a month in the account in any month. Couldn't make use of the 7% interest. Changed to SO instead to remove a repeat of this issue, but low and behold, the SO didn't get sent, so I cancelled SO and sent £250 manually. But the bank then honoured the SO, sent the money. So I withdrew the £250. They then withdrew the £250 because I'd sent the £250 twice. Balance £0. 2 months in succession with a balance of £0, in a 7 % interest account. I realise this is equally about the Savings account so will leave a review for that also. And their customer services team were not the best in regard to payments to / from a credit card. Customer service is a breath of fresh air

5
Customer service is a breath of fresh air. UK based member of staff called me to go through setting up my account, recommended a linked saving account and a year later contacted me with a new higher rate saving account which she sorted over the phone. Really friendly. Completely different to my customer service experiences with other banks and businesses. Very happy to be banking with them, the only negative is the lack of physical branches (my nearest is quite far away). Reviewed on: 10th October 2024

Good value account with extras

My husband and I are very pleased with the Co-Operative Bank's Everyday Extra account. It does require a monthly deposit, but for £15 a month we get travel insurance, RAC roadside assistance and mobile phone insurance as well as small amounts of cashback. Very good value for money.
