Review of the Halifax, Clarity credit card:

-7.5% for exchange rate

This card gives you free withdrawals aboard but at a stink exchange rate of 7.5%. If you do use if for a cash withdrawal pay it off straight away so you don't start paying interest. However it is good for paying for purchases etc as you get the interbank rate. Reviewed on: 6th June 2017

Falls from grace

This was a great credit card for spending money abroad - affordable and simple to use. However they have recently changed the rules so that paying the money back early - for example to reduce the interest charged on cash withdrawals - does not reduce the direct debit charge for the next month. After several instances where my credit card was significantly in the positive I have been left with no choice but to cancel the direct debit and so am now avoiding using it where possible Reviewed on: 25th January 2020

Too unreliable

Several years ago we got this for use abroad and it has been more trouble than it’s worth. Even if we pre advise of a trip (which they say we don’t need to do) any payment is invariably blocked. Twice they’ve assumed fraud and cancelled the card (and will only send a replacement to your home address within a week) so we couldn’t use it again for the rest of the trip. We end up using our UK card which costs far more than using a card that is less competitive than Clarity but does actually work when abroad. So now we just take lots of cash (at online rates) and whatever is left is then a bonus when we go away next time! Reviewed on: 12th January 2020

Blocked card day 1 of my holiday abroad

Day 1 of my holiday they blocked my card. I called them and their automatic system of entering my DOB was telling me my DOB was incorrect (it wasn't) I was then asked some ridiculous security questions such as what year did I open the account (i wasnt 100% of the year as I've had for around 3 or 4 years, so i 'failed' the security questions despite knowing all the normal questions... and then they promptly blocked my card and said i could only get this unlocked my going into a branch in england. Well I couldn't possibly do that as I was in USA for the next 3 weeks and now with no credit card! I had set up the voice recognition and told them I knew all of the normal security questions and pleaded with them to go through the security process again but they couldn't care less and left me stranded abroad without my card. I closed the account down there and then. They knew it was me as they let me shut the account down funnily enough! Ridiculous!! Do NOT rely on this card abroad as I've had numerous nightmares with it since they stopped asking you to tell them when you're going abroad. I'm submitting a complaint. Unreliable and ridiculous.
