Health insurance is not what you think

Hearing bad stories and delays in NHS health care I felt peace of mind thinking if we were ill we would have the best care immediately. We were in the 2nd year of Saga Bupa cover so when I had issues with my oesophagus I had to pay for my NHS doctor to fill in a moratorium form to say he hadn't seen me for this issue as it would invalidate my claim. Causing some delay in my 1st consultation with a gastroenterologist. I then had to wait 5 weeks for an endoscopy. NHS waiting time is 2 weeks and with Saga Bupa it took 8 weeks. Then after my diagnosis of eosinophilic oesophagitis the treatment was a 6 week course of steroid, the insurance doesn't cover this so its going to cost me another £440 on top of the £250 excess and £40 doctors fee. I will end up paying more for this diagnosis and treatment than Saga Bupa. I have found my experience with Saga Bupa very impersonal, its just like having car insurance. The policy exclusions are a nightmare to understand and are peppered with get out clauses. I was sold this policy on the basis I would get better care more quickly than NHS and I would have access to better drugs. Simply not the case, I will be taking this to the Financial Ombudsman as I feel this policy was mis-sold. Read more Read less

I had adequate home insurance and my monthly premium was £20.55 per month. Saga automatically renewed my policy and took a payment of £58.88 from my account. Confused I called Saga who informed me that was the new monthly payment. I have never had a home insurance claim and nothing had changed. I was told that had upgraded my policy to one i did not ask for or need. They then offered me the same policy for £32 a month? I cancelled my policy. I used Saga because they seem to champion the older generation. This is obviously not the case. I was told I would not get a refund for the extortionate payment they had already taken. I worry about vulnerable trusting people who do not expect to be taken advantage of in this way. Read more Read less

I offered my home and car insurance to Saga, purely by accident , but as a young 65 year old thought they’d offer a good deal. But how wrong was I. Absolute no support on a car scrape I had, apparently I had clicked on ‘voluntary excess’ and ‘excess of £150’ which meant I had an excess of £500 , which didn’t cover the cost so it did don’t cover any costs! They couid not explain what ‘voluntary’ was? I didn’t therefore claim anything but when renewal was due, my costs increased from £250 to £530! When queried, they said I’d made two claims !! Neither of which is taken up! Would not use them again! Read more Read less

Saga changed its insurance provider from AXA to BUPA last year. The service is not as good. The authorisation process is slower, the staff are less empathetic, even in the specialist care extensions, and I feel that the new provider is more inclined to an attitude of how can we deny the claim, and less how can we help you. The care is still there but it’s harder to access, and a much less positive experience. Read more Read less

Had an "incident" where a driver ran a red light, cutting across me, and I slammed into her at about 40mph. My VW Polo worked brilliantly - crumple zone, airbags etc, but I got out alive. The car is a write off. Other person admitted liability, and in fairness kept that stance with her insurance company - Admiral. This happened on a Saturday at 11.00am, and by 5.00pm I had contacted SAGA, and gave all the details and was given the email address to send the photos and dashcam video to SAGA. Did this - and since (It is now Thurdsay pm) then SAGA, have not contacted me at all, despite me phoning up every day. Today I was told that SAGA are only the brokers, and that I should contact Ageas, the underwriters !! I was also told that Ageas would ring me back - never happened. The company that has come out of this well, is Admiral. They contacted me (having got my details from their client), and told me that SAGA had not forwarded any details or photos or my dashcam footage, but that their client admitted full fault, and that i could ask SAGA to close the claim, which would lead to a faster resolution, and less cost to both companies. Today I have tried to get SAGA to close the claim, but getting a sensible response is hopeless. I was in the lucky position of being able to go out and buy another car - the loan / courtesy car that I was entitled to on my policy, never materialised. As, I said previously not a single person from SAGA has contacted me. Disgraceful service - I'm in my 70's and SAGA at one time their unique selling point was that they were a company for the over 50's - I think that USP is now out of the window - they are like any other company - do not appreciate customers - let alone loyalty. I will never use any SAGA product again. Read more Read less

    Woefully poor emergency claims experience

We are in the middle of an ongoing and still unresolved EMERGENCY PLUMBING CLAIM after four and a half weeks. The Claims team don’t understand about basic customer service, saying they’ll get back you and then nothing happens so we always have to phone them - our phone time to them is now about ten hours. They use an emergency plumber that you can’t contact over the weekends. You can’t ever speak to the same person twice even if you have their name, neither will they give you the Network Manager’s name or contact details nor put you through to anyone who can actually make a decision. It’s “not their protocol” apparently so you’re at the mercy of one of 80 telephone operators who aren’t allowed to make decisions and just sound bored as they repeat ad nauseam “there’s nothing I can do”. I actually doubt the Network Manager exists, because they should have contacted us yesterday and we’re still waiting. They also demonstrate poor competence - they arranged for a second plumber to contact us; heard nothing so we phoned them - turns out they don’t even do the type of work we need and had told Saga that but Saga didn’t bother to let us know. Our claim has been escalated to the invisible Network Manager so now no one in the Claims team can do anything apparently, not even to arrange for another (third or fourth by now?!) plumber - meanwhile we’ve been 4 and a half weeks without water! We have lodged our complaint and were supposed to have heard from the Complaints team on Monday - to date have heard nothing. I can’t find anything about their emergency KPIs, probably because they know they won’t meet them. Meanwhile the leak is getting worse, we are STILL awaiting a plumber (great emergency service!) and this claim is costing Saga more by the day due to their total incompetence. Read more Read less

Been a customer for a number of years and called Saga. Best they could do for me is to reduce by £50.00. On our way to Spain via Ireland, we broke down as we were about to board the ferry at Cairnryan. We waited 11 hours for recovery of our motorhome but we were left at the ferry port because the recovery driver couldn't take us with him. No contact from the RAC and I was not able to get through to them. Abandoned 200 miles from home on a wet, cold and dark evening with all of our possessions in our motorhome, we found the nearest hotel, 23 miles away. The next day we discovered that our vehicle would not be unloaded at the repairers until late afternoon, another 120 miles from where we were. Only then could we get access to our belongings. Eventually, the next day, I got through to the RAC who arranged for me to pick up a hire car from several miles away. We drove to the repairers and collected what we could from the motorhome and drove another 70 miles home, arriving there exhausted, 36 hours after breaking down. I was extremely disappointed with the lack of communication from the RAC, leaving a couple aged 75 and 72 on the quayside at Cairnryan ferry port to find their own way to a hotel and then a further 120 miles to reclaim their possessions, and a further 70 miles home. Although we have received an apology and an offer of £50 as a goodwill gesture, I feel that this in no way compensates for the fact that we were left for 10 hours, trying to keep warm in freezing temperatures. Then having to make our way to a hotel checking in without bags. The RAC have offered to pay for the hotel. Read more Read less
