Review of the Scottish Building Society, Mortgages:

Free legals cost £1200!

SBS offered mortgages to older people so we were interested. We asked for less than 40% LTV. They asked for an exhausting amount of extra financial info, including about two other investment houses we own. Once started, SBS were surprised to learn that we lived in England despite having had that info for months. As a result they changed the free legals to a £250 contribution to our English legals, which were £650. Once in process they insisted on a further legal form which had to be administered by a lawyer, costing a further £600. Mortgage completed 5 months after initiation at a net legal cost of £1000. The Scottish Building Society offered us a mortgage when other lenders refused because of our age. Their rates are competitive and their customer service is excellent. Reviewed on: 10th May 2020
