Review of the Swinton Insurance, Car insurance:

If I could give them ZERO I would

I have used Swinton on and off for the past 25 years so was happy to take car insurance with them in November 2023. In July 2024 we moved house and as you do started notifying change of address. So I dutifully did with Swinton. That's when the nightmare began. Spoke to Toby and explained I needed to change the address only on my motor policy. So he asked all the relevant questions and said he needed to submit it to the underwriters to see if there would be a increase in the premium. He came back and mumbled something about a rejection code as the area was unacceptable. I asked him what he meant by that and he couldn't answer. Now the area I moved to has high end value houses in a semi rural location, certainly not a crime hotspot! He put me on to Lindi who just kept stating the area was unacceptable but I can cancel this policy and they would put me with a new company. Why, I asked? Please tell me why this area is unacceptable? She just kept saying the insurance company stated it was not an acceptable area. I asked her to verify who the insurance company was. AGEAS came the reply. I was stunned. We have a second car, insured by my wife, and she successfully changed the address the day before with no additional premium. It is insured through AGEAS!! Her reply was genuinely incoherent by which time my wife had entered the room curious why I was on the phone so long and started listening to the what was happening. I asked to speak to a supervisor for an explanation. I got Karen. I explained what had happened and wanted an explanation why two people living at the same address received such polar opposite responses. Again she appeared not to understand and stuck to the script of it being an unacceptable area. I recall saying regardless that my wife lives in the same house and that AGEAS accepted she is in an acceptable area (no additional premium) but Swinton say it's not. All she did was keep offering me a new policy with a different company or a cancellation of the policy. I asked for quotes for a new policy with a different insurance company, however her eventual reply was that none would insure me. As my wife was simultaneously obtaining quotations from a comparison website this was obviously another blatant lie. I believe this is the procedure when a customer won't change to another company to build Swinton's revenue stream. They get booted. Needless to say the policy with Swinton is now cancelled. I urge everyone to avoid this company at all costs. I dread to think what may have happened if I had ever had to make a claim through Swinton. Reviewed on: 5th July 2024

this company took money from my account for over a year and refuse to return it on the basis that i didnt explain myself. A classic thieving insurance company that hood winked me into a policy when it wasnt required then overcharged me for 11 months. AVOID THIS COMPANY Reviewed on: 27th February 2024

Total rip-off

Went with this company for my car insurance as their quote was the lowest on Compare the Market. Unfortunately after signing up and paying, and with the insurance already in place, they emailed to say there was "something they needed to check" so we had to call them. They then proceeded to tell us that there was an "at fault" claim for one of the named drivers back in 2019, which was a total lie as the driver never made such claim and their current policy clearly shows 5 years no claim, as we had honestly declared in the application. They tried to say this non-existent claim would raise the premium by £65! Naturally I said they can keep their policy and that I wanted to cancel while still within the cooling off period, so I can go with the next cheapest provider on the Compare the Market list which was only £15 more expensive, but hopefully more honest. I was charged a £25 cancellation fee which was ridiculous, but I paid it on principle. Clearly their tactic is to lure you in with the cheapest quote and then make something up to increase the premium once they've got you. I'm surprised by all the positive reviews on other sites, but most are probably fake, or maybe they just choose to rip off the occasional customer. Well they won't have my well earned money, but they can have this 1 star review instead. And there's more coming. So for the £25 they got from me, they'll get a lot of bad publicity. Terrible business sense. They are a total rip-off company and I'll complain to Compare the Market about them. Stay clear! Reviewed on: 16th October 2023

Diabolical, avoid at all costs. Rip off

Cancelled insurance due to selling car. 1 hour on phone on top of the nearly 2 hours the day before. Extortionate fees for leaving, I spoke to numerous advisors and the amount I would have to pay to cancel kept changing depending on who I spoke to. Sadly the advisors did not have a clue and thought it strange that I would like to know how they worked out what I was due back. I think I may have developed a stomach ulcer through sheer frustration. Please avoid and don't be fooled into thinking you have the best price because you sure won't get the best customer service. rip off

i went through close brothers who swinton are part of ,i was quoted one premium and monthly payment when i "signed" the agreement which looks dodgy as hell when i looked at it and the monthly price had doubled!!!!! I spent the best part of nearly an hour trying to cancel it and all i got from the overseas call centre was we need to go through data protection(which they dont)one even said my name but said i cant tell you anything about it unless we go through "data protection???"AVOID SWINTON WITH A VERY WIDE BERTH you have been warned,im now trying to get the 2 payments they took off me back and cancel. My wife had an accident on the 26 th July,after numerous phone calls to numerous companies,Swinton doesn’t sort it for you?? 15 days with no courtesy car,15 days and no further forward,this company is making us ill,avoid at all costs, looking more and more like a scam! Inept agents.

Got an online quote for £604.47 Unable to except my new car registration and advised to call. On the phone for 55 mins reiterated all the same information that I filled out online with the slowest agent only to be told the quote was upped to £1005.00. Unbelievable waste time and false quote given online. Within 5 mins with another company had insurance sorted. Don't waste time and energy on Swinton. Reviewed on: 1st August 2023
