Review of the Swinton Insurance, Car insurance:

If I could give them ZERO I would

1
I have used Swinton on and off for the past 25 years so was happy to take car insurance with them in November 2023. In July 2024 we moved house and as you do started notifying change of address. So I dutifully did with Swinton. That's when the nightmare began. Spoke to Toby and explained I needed to change the address only on my motor policy. So he asked all the relevant questions and said he needed to submit it to the underwriters to see if there would be a increase in the premium. He came back and mumbled something about a rejection code as the area was unacceptable. I asked him what he meant by that and he couldn't answer. Now the area I moved to has high end value houses in a semi rural location, certainly not a crime hotspot! He put me on to Lindi who just kept stating the area was unacceptable but I can cancel this policy and they would put me with a new company. Why, I asked? Please tell me why this area is unacceptable? She just kept saying the insurance company stated it was not an acceptable area. I asked her to verify who the insurance company was. AGEAS came the reply. I was stunned. We have a second car, insured by my wife, and she successfully changed the address the day before with no additional premium. It is insured through AGEAS!! Her reply was genuinely incoherent by which time my wife had entered the room curious why I was on the phone so long and started listening to the what was happening. I asked to speak to a supervisor for an explanation. I got Karen. I explained what had happened and wanted an explanation why two people living at the same address received such polar opposite responses. Again she appeared not to understand and stuck to the script of it being an unacceptable area. I recall saying regardless that my wife lives in the same house and that AGEAS accepted she is in an acceptable area (no additional premium) but Swinton say it's not. All she did was keep offering me a new policy with a different company or a cancellation of the policy. I asked for quotes for a new policy with a different insurance company, however her eventual reply was that none would insure me. As my wife was simultaneously obtaining quotations from a comparison website this was obviously another blatant lie. I believe this is the procedure when a customer won't change to another company to build Swinton's revenue stream. They get booted. Needless to say the policy with Swinton is now cancelled. I urge everyone to avoid this company at all costs. I dread to think what may have happened if I had ever had to make a claim through Swinton. Reviewed on: 5th July 2024

Re-newal

The only company that did not raise it's prices at re-newal time and were the cheapest. Reviewed on: 12th November 2018

Great service

Very helpful staff

I recently had to change my car insurance details as I bought a new car. The person on the phone was so helpful and friendly. I also wasn't charged the admin fee as I was unable to change my details online. Reviewed on: 23rd September 2018

After years they hiked up my insurance

3
After being with them for many years with a decent price for my insurance, they hiked the price up by more than £400! The policy was exactly the same & nothing had changed! Very disappointed Reviewed on: 23rd September 2018

Automatic renewal at very high rate

2
I had my car insurance renewed at a very high rate, I had to call and re negotiate and got a much cheaper quote at nearly 50 percent less but I had to pay to move to the cheaper option. Why are customers renewed at the high rate automatically without being informed of better options before automatic renewal Reviewed on: 23rd September 2018

Friendly & helpful

After many years of staying with the same company, “the post office”I decided to switch, I spoke with an extremely polite and helpful lady, as well as saving money, I was impressed with the experience, after all “good manners are free”! Later that week after telling the post office why I was cancelling, I received a renewal quote from them in the post, it had gone up! Reviewed on: 11th September 2018

Swinton - Cheap But Useless

1
After a month my swinton insurance cancelled. You have to upload your proof of ncb via there website which I did easily enough, end of storey I thought. After a month got an email saying my policy was cancelled. I rang them and they were no help what so ever. They pretty much said they didn`t believe me that I had uploaded my proof of ncb, although they did acknowledge I had registered online with them ( why else would I register online other than to upload my ncb!?), and they said emails had been sent to me warning of the cancellation. Search of my email revealed no such emails had been sent! So yes they are cheap but seems like it might be a gamble as to whether your car is actually insured, in summary I went to direct line, little more expensive but helpful and there web stuff works, swinton are shit. Seems good but big increases on renewal

4
They're OK and when you call for help they do resolve and help but the renewal costs don't give any allowance for being a loyal customer and if you miss a payment the fees are very high Reviewed on: 1st October 2017

Ok

Good the first year but premiums hiked second year. Were not helpful when I asked Reviewed on: 1st October 2017
