Barclays are simply not to be trusted with your money

My mum rang them to close her savings account, and have her money transferred to another bank - "Sorry, we can't transfer that much in one go, you'll have to keep ringing us up or go into a branch" (local branch closed 2 years ago). Went into another branch - "You'll have to join a queue and wait, it'll be 1.5 - 2 hours. No you can't make an appointment, we don't do that sort of thing by appointment." Went back to plan A, mum called to transfer money £15k at a time over several days. 1st call 15 mins to get through to a human, call was conveniently cut off just at the point of transferring money. 2nd call 25 mins to get through, operative had no knowledge or record of 1st call, she had to explain everything over again. Payment finally made, but she now faces several more calls exactly the same to get the rest of HER OWN money. Surely the financial regulations of this country do not allow this level of obstruction? I felt very tempted to call the police and report Barclays as scammers. Reviewed on: 15th February 2023

Outraged with Barclays

I have been a customer for almost 40 years. I have also had a business account for 17 years and always been thousands of pounds in credit. Last week they closed my business accounts because apparently I had not updated my personal details. This, however is not the case as I updated my details on the app although there were no actual changes to my details. I have no access to my own money and I am left without a business account so customers cannot pay me and I cannot pay my suppliers. How can they possibly think this is acceptable? I have phoned numerous times only to be told that a cheque will arrive in due course made out to the company. What am I meant to do with this as I have no business account to pay it into! I have applied to open an account with another bank but this takes time and I am left high and dry. This has caused me so much distress and they simply don't care. How can they be allowed to simply cut off your livelihood by keeping your hard earned cash until it suits them? Absolutely shocking behaviour Barclays and I will be sure to tell my clients not to bank with you! Disgraceful! Reviewed on: 13th February 2023

Sadly I cannot give them NO STAR. I would if I could. As a small business we have banked with them for over 10 years and today they took all our money and shut our business account down - insisting that we had been warned as we were not responding to their apparent request to confirm our address (which is still the same as it was in day 1 when we started banking with them) ! This was a huge shock and our calls for help were met with rude and unhelpful responses. We are left hanging with payment from our online hanging in the air. We have now opened a new business account with another bank. Apparently the money that was in the account is going to be sent to us by check! What a terrible way to treat your customers. If you like to wait for 3 hrs and no one answers this is the bank for you

Shut all the local branches now I have to drive 6 miles park and pay and walk across town, service is awful no contact and the ring back service is a joke a random number appears and asks for all your personel details to GO through security LOL . Been on hold for 3 hrs 10 mins now will be leaving Barclays as soon as I get set up with some bank that wants my custom Reviewed on: 8th February 2023

Threats to close the account so I have to spend 2 hours on the phone twice!!!

Had to provide some 'more information' about my company (we have banked with barclays for over 50 years) and are instructed to reply within 10 days or the account gets closed. I understand that we have to comply with the latest money laundering regulations but this service is absolutely utterly shocking - well its not a service really. After a barrage of text messages, emails, and app messages asking me to contact them - getting cut off, and further waiting - after 2 hours on the phone with some godawful music its difficult to remain objective. I realise the phone operator has no control over the ridiculous waiting times but really? After closing most of our high street banks this is what we are left with - hours of complete boredom on the phone, because obviously, I've got nothing else better to do. Bloody awful

I don't know where to start. I've been a personal customer for 30 years, and set up a business account with them in 2022. I've always been in credit and my business is profitable. The experience with Barclays has been awful. They closed their local branch within weeks of my opening my account, leaving the nearest brannch more than 20 miles aways. An overdraft application has taken months to progress, despite having an offer made in the post in June. I'm being ghosted and ignored by the business banking team, who are simply unable to help. Considering other options as am fed up with chasing. This is not the 'hassle free' experience they spend millions of pounds selling to people. It feels like a mess, and they've lost me for good.
