I've had a mortgage with Bath building society for 15 years . I was made redundant just before Christmas 2011 and was out of work for 3 whole months and couldn't pay the mortgage. When I contacted Bath they were very decent about it and when I did find another job they were flexible about the repayments. Above all they didn't make me feel humiliated like I was begging which I couldn't say for my own bank or other providers. Well done Bath and thank you, your kindness was not forgotten! Communication is not very great, however when through to chat with someone they were helpful. They didn't have my email address on the system to request additional documents from me, despite communicated via email while initiating the process of mortgage application. so clear gap in departments. Got there in the end

Very slow, took 6 months to agree a simple mortgage, seemingly very picky and to some extent box ticking. On the plus side, terms were favourable and the service was more personal than other mortgage lenders. We used a broker but in hindsight I think dealing direct would have been much better, also note BBS will only deal with solicitors not a conveyancing company, broker should have (but didn't) advised this. Unfortunately, I am unable to discuss the mortgage application without the applicant's consent, however I can assure you that the Society is taking every possible to step to minimise any further delays. In regard to the Society’s criteria for Solicitors, the broker who submitted the application would have been informed of the Society's requirements at the outset and should have relayed this.
