I've had a mortgage with Bath building society for 15 years . I was made redundant just before Christmas 2011 and was out of work for 3 whole months and couldn't pay the mortgage. When I contacted Bath they were very decent about it and when I did find another job they were flexible about the repayments. Above all they didn't make me feel humiliated like I was begging which I couldn't say for my own bank or other providers. Well done Bath and thank you, your kindness was not forgotten! Excellent Service in Difficult Times

With our interest only mortgage due to end on 28th of February 2021, we wrote to the Bath Building Society in December 2020 enquiring about a Retirement, Interest Only mortgage (RIO). We received excellent help and advice from Tim Randall. He recommended we contact our current lender to request an extension as the Covid 19 pandemic was causing lengthy delays due to the majority of office based staff working from home. This we did, then with Tim's help and guidance we applied for the mortgage. The paperwork was received by the Bath on 5th January and we completed on 25th February. Tim was always available by email and occasionally by phone. His response was often by return and never more that 24 hours. In the past 50 years we have had a number of mortgages/remortgages but have never received such excellent service, under the most difficult of circumstances. We cannot praise the Bath Building Society highly enough and single out Tim Randall who went above and beyond for special mention. Reviewed on: 9th March 2021

Mislead during Mortgage process

An exceptionally poor experience, in April we were given what we felt clear in principle agreement to our mortgage, which we spent 4 months working to meet only for the society to change their approval right at the very last minute, this cost £2000 I In costs that we have wasted- we are so frustrated at the society... Friedly accessible and a good deal!

Having our mortgage with BBS was a pleasant experience (we have had other companies previously). Everything was clear and straightforward - and when we were able to increase our payments to clear the mortgage that was very straightforward. We have savings still with BBS and now live far away but the folk on the phone are so helpful and real. The only thing we'd like to change is having a branch in Cornwall! Reviewed on: 6th June 2020

Shocking Support to the Armed Forces

Having banked with BBS for over 20 years (myself, my wife & all 3 children) my wife & I applied for a mortgage. Because i am a serving Army Officer who has served outside the country in the last 3 years (full UK taxpayers), i was told i would not be considered at all. I didn't even have the chance to submit any paperwork - it was an absolute NO from the outset. Shame on you! I would expect far better from a trusted local Building Society. I now have an excellent mortgage with the Coventry Building Society - who we have not banked with before. That must be wrong. Your staff in the Bath branch are superb - but your mortgage policy is outrageous and deeply unpatriotic. We were, and remain, deeply disappointed with the BBS. Reviewed on: 4th June 2020

We regularly review our lending policy as well as our agreement with our credit reference agency, and whilst we don’t currently have the capability to check BFPO addresses to obtain the three year credit history which is part of our lending criteria, it is something that is under consideration. But this in isolation should not get in the way of us providing a personalised service, looking at and fully considering individual circumstances. We will also undertake some additional training with our sales teams, using your case as an example, and I will be stressing the importance of identifying exceptional circumstances when reviewing all applications.
