If you’re eligible for an overdraft, the first £50 is interest free. The FlexDirect account has to be managed online or over the phone, not at the branch.

The Peoples Account

I have been with Nationwide now for 3 years and have 2 accounts with them. If I have ever had a reason to speak to them they are always very willing to help and in a good patient manner. Always treated with respect and courtesy - feel like I am a person not just a user of their products/services. I call them the Peoples Bank as it is run for the benefit of people as members decide how it runs. AGM are held annually all members can have a say and we are listened to. Bad customer service

I went on the chat, and they couldn’t help me they said I had to phone in, after waiting 20 mins I got though and explained my issue they said they couldn’t help so I had to wait another 30 mins for the next department who then said they couldn’t help and I have to be transferred to the team I was speaking to at the start, I told him not to transfer me so he checked with his boss and said they couldn’t help with my arranged overdraft interest as my reasoning wasn’t excepted. Great ethical banking

Efficient AND mutual

After 20 years with my previous bank, I recently switched my current account to Nationwide because I wanted to start using Open Banking to manage my money. Nationwide handled the switch perfectly, no glitches. They were fab on the phone and in branch. I love that you can pay in cash through a hole in the wall outside of banking hours, that’s so useful. They were able to give me a non-contactless card so I can stick to using my phone to pay contactlessly and not worry about my debit card being misused. If I do misplace my card, I can quickly freeze it in the app without needing to cancel it till I’ve had a good look. And Apple Pay still works while the card is frozen! I love the ‘round up’ in the Nationwide’s app so I can stick my change in a savings account. And I admire their ‘impulse saving’ idea and the way they make it so easy to do it. I admire the fact that Nationwide have a branch in every town I visit and are committed to keeping them going. It’s easy to see why Nationwide is the UK’s biggest mutual and why so many people bank with them. I’m glad I switched. Reviewed on: 1st February 2022

Great ethical banking

If you want accountability and ethical banking Nationwide offer that alongside a robust app, online banking and branches (in case you need face-to-face services or support). This bank works for you and puts your money to good use too. Reviewed on: 25th January 2022

Mixed feelings

I like the staff, however you can't pay cheques in via the app like you can with other banks and the app always has problems. My nearest branch is quite a way so that causes me problems. Long hold times when calling, but the staff seem nice. Reviewed on: 12th January 2022
