Review of the Santander, Mortgage:

Worst Company Ever! Avoid if you are a first time buyer

My Partner and myself recently applied to Santander for a new mortgage on the help to buy scheme for new build properties. They gave us a promise that their is no problems whatsoever and we can proceed to find a new build property. after we have found the new-build, our dream house that ticketed all the boxes, we proceeded to complete the mortgage application. After an initial yes, and got all the other paperwork and solicitors and everything else in order, paid for the survey and all these things, they suddenly withdrawn the mortgage. just like that! It was not a affordability issue or a credit issue. after a lot of fighting with them we eventually find out that the underwrites had the wrong address history and they could not find us on the credit file and then declined it on that basis. The address was correctly given on the application paperwork. it is clear that someone in administration has made an error and typed 54 in stead of 45. Stander will not review or accept the appeal. "they sympathise with our situation and can clearly see that it was a innocent clerical error however we can not appeal the decision. Our decision is final and it is because of the incorrect address history" Even though it was their error, they refuse to take another look at his application. We also are not getting any money back. WE have lost £1000's in fees both with the solicitors and the builders that we are not getting back, and we have lost our house because the builders does not want to wait for a new mortgage application being done with a new lender. Because the computer is saying "no" because the computer was given inaccurate information Santander says NO. Even-though they have acknowledge that there was an error, they still say no. Never in my Life have I dealt with an company that was so in-human and bullying as Santander. I am at a loss for words to the this. If you are a first time buyer, please avoid like the plague, they will cost you a lot of money that you may not have and will take you years to save up again. Easy to use website

I use the site a lot to review my mortgage and they seem to keep adding new functions. Any company is difficult to get through to on the phone, so using online facilities helps. I like the way you can use a debit card now to pay off some of your mortgage now, much easier than ringing in! Reviewed on: 13th March 2023

Mortgage up by £550 a month

Had to move from fixed to a tracker which is the cheapest option and is still £550 a month more than before. Now paying £2200 a month repayment and only about £1000 of it is actually paying off the mortgage so I guess I’m just paying rent to the bank too? I’m locked in with a £999 product fee so can’t move when the fixed prices inevitably fall without taking the hit again. Reviewed on: 28th February 2023

Looking good

The fixed rate term is coming to an end and I am looking to pay off the mortgage rather than move to another deal or go onto a variable rate. The information I was given suggests that this will be an easy process - not what I was expecting! Reviewed on: 26th February 2023

Good until fixed term ended

I understand that all mortgage products are the same at the moment but we're with santander and the interest has gone up over 4% over the last 6 months making repayments almost unaffordable Reviewed on: 23rd February 2023

Disaster

My morrgage was up for renewal from 2nd of January. Before renewing I wanted to make an overpayment and then renew the mortgage. Santander do not deal with mortgages in their branches so the only way to renew is over the phone or through the banking App. Phone banking is a complete nightmare with long waiting being cut off and having to phone again and wait again hours of time wasting....the banking App does not function properly and you have to wait days/weeks for updates. I made £33,000 overpayment but my outstanding balance increased from £298,000 to £370,000 all they said is wait for the account to update...I wanted to pay another overpayment but none of the mortgage advisors could calculate how this would effect my mortgage. It took until mid February for my mortgage account to update by then interest rates had gone up they offered me £100 for the compensation of all faults occured nothing for the extra rate increase. They are not interested in resolving problems, phone banking hours waiting, branches not interested. Complete disaster I have reported them to The Ombudsman will take it as far as I can...stay away!
