Worst Company Ever! Avoid if you are a first time buyer

My Partner and myself recently applied to Santander for a new mortgage on the help to buy scheme for new build properties. They gave us a promise that their is no problems whatsoever and we can proceed to find a new build property. after we have found the new-build, our dream house that ticketed all the boxes, we proceeded to complete the mortgage application. After an initial yes, and got all the other paperwork and solicitors and everything else in order, paid for the survey and all these things, they suddenly withdrawn the mortgage. just like that! It was not a affordability issue or a credit issue. after a lot of fighting with them we eventually find out that the underwrites had the wrong address history and they could not find us on the credit file and then declined it on that basis. The address was correctly given on the application paperwork. it is clear that someone in administration has made an error and typed 54 in stead of 45. Stander will not review or accept the appeal. "they sympathise with our situation and can clearly see that it was a innocent clerical error however we can not appeal the decision. Our decision is final and it is because of the incorrect address history" Even though it was their error, they refuse to take another look at his application. We also are not getting any money back. WE have lost £1000's in fees both with the solicitors and the builders that we are not getting back, and we have lost our house because the builders does not want to wait for a new mortgage application being done with a new lender. Because the computer is saying "no" because the computer was given inaccurate information Santander says NO. Even-though they have acknowledge that there was an error, they still say no. Never in my Life have I dealt with an company that was so in-human and bullying as Santander. I am at a loss for words to the this. If you are a first time buyer, please avoid like the plague, they will cost you a lot of money that you may not have and will take you years to save up again. I don't know where to begin from, this bank broke me. Run away from them, do not apply for a mortgage with this bank. Their attitude and professionalism is scandalous! FCA should investigate this bank for not treating customers fairly. Reviewed on: 8th June 2021

Mortgage with the shittest service

If you want free stress which leads to depression that feels like death then sure go ahead with this bank. If there is an international appeal i can make against this bank then please let me know. They took 11 weeks to open my mortgage case. Every 2 weeks they would come back asking for additional document which i immediately provided however after another 8 weeks they rejected my case without a valid reason or should i say something that they should have told me before applying with them. The bank was so slow and wouldnt answer to my broker. The property that i was purchasing its owner was sp generous that they were willing to wait for my mortgage to pass. I felt so bad when i told them that the bank rejected me. I wish it was in my hands and i could do something. I wad helpless. My daughter had her eye surgery recently and the bank wanted translations of every single 6 months statements which was from around 7 different people and she spent 3 full days translating each thing from the statement. Still her hard work didnt pay off. I recommend do not make the biggest mistake of your life by going to this bank if you are planning to start a mortgage application. Terrible service. Total time wasters!!

All information was submitted and deemed complete. Then they asked for one piece of information after another - they obviously have no competent processed in place or they would ask for everything in one go! They have come back 4 times for more information with a 5 day gap each time! We are close to losing our dream house due this poor service. Even my solicitor has said they are the absolute worst bank to deal with and she advises people to avoid them if possible!! Wish I had spoken to her first . DO NOT OPEN an account with Santander. This is the worst bank ever. I have Barclays from three years and I never had any problem since I opened the account. I just wanted a backup account and I thought Santander was a good bank as they have all those nice looking branches but I guess the say “never judge a book by its cover” it’s true. I opened the account online and it wasn’t easy at all. I had to post them the copies of the documents required as the “Upload” option on the website was not working. After waited almost a week for a response, for the account to be opened and for all the letters that I received (4 in total) I tried to login into my account and it was basically blocked. I dealt with three different people in the Customer Service to understand what was going on as I just opened the account but the answer was the same “We don’t know what happened. There is a block in your account for security purpose. The security team will sort it out”. Well, I waited almost a month for this problem to be fixed and in the end I just opened an account (very easy, 5 minutes in total) with Lloyds and I called Santander to close my account which will be impossible for sure as I saw online that a lot of people are trying to close an account with them unsuccessfully. Friendly and helpful

I have two bank accounts and a mortgage with Santander - I chose them initially because of geographic location in relation to the village I was moving to - I soon learned how friendly and efficient the staff in my local branch are . Nothing is too much trouble and they helpfully suggest other ways the bank can help with different solutions and products to suit my needs - but without being the pushy all about sales type - the personal touch makes a real difference to my banking experience Reviewed on: 16th April 2021

Long waits

Long waits on phonelines. Limited functions on app. Overpayments in lump sum had to be done over the phone. A lot harder to manage mortgage balance than other providers Reviewed on: 8th April 2021

Terrible service

Absolutely shocking service. Handling of our mortgage was handed to a third party who messed up a lot of things and eventually led Santander to extend our completion date otherwise it wouldn't have gone through. How to lose a Customer

I'd give no stars, if possible. Stay away from this bank, if you're self-employed. My husband and I had a mortgage with Santander for over 2 years, until we decided to move to a bigger property in the middle of the pandemic. We only asked to port our existing mortgage, as we were going to pay an additional deposit, which meant the loan to value would significantly reduce. With a chain of 5 people waiting for Santander to give a decision, it was a very stressful time. As my husband is self-employed, they kept asking for further information. First, they offered 20% less than expected and then, for a shorter lending period (by 2 months!). Both times, we agreed within 1 hour, but every time they advised the underwriting team would take another 10 working days to assess. Please note my husband continued to work throughout the pandemic. After 3 months and a third request to reassess the case, we were so concerned about losing the property and missing the stamp duty holiday, that our broker suggested we tried another lender. We contacted Halifax and within 4 working days we had an agreement in place! Santander had the most appalling service. I never write reviews, but I had to do this one.
