Lockdown crippled me financially, but

Lockdown crippled me financially. Lost my job and was denied ANY help from the government. I was fortunate enough to get out loans and credit cards (not knowing how long we’d be in lockdown for) and quickly maxed them out. By the time I’d gotten back into work I had amassed a HUGE amount of debt. I was trying to pay it off but getting absolutely nowhere. Not even sure how I came across or how I heard about Step Change but I bit the bullet and got in contact. Not even joking, it has been one of the most beneficial decisions I’ve ever made. The people I’ve spoken to and the help they’ve given me has been life changing and life saving. I can’t even put into words how grateful I am that these people are here and for the help they’ve given me. I was in the most darkest place mentally, I couldn’t afford to eat, I couldn’t afford to get to work. I couldn't sleep. I couldn’t see a way out, except through one route….i was at work when I called them. That day I spoke to them and when my payment plan was set up, I felt like a new person. I sat at work, tears in my eyes. Knowing that after everything, I was getting some help and everything would be okay…this company literally saved my life and for that I will be eternally grateful. I considered ending it all.....

I was unable to sleep, eat and considered ending everything as I could not cope at all. I had to pluck up courage to call StepChange but once this had been accomplished they made it very easy and everything else just flowed. I was never made to feel like a complete failure and have been able to get my life back on track. I rarely need to speak to customer service but when I do, they are kind, caring and non-judgmental. Changed my life!

StepChange have really changed my life. All of a sudden I found myself I a huge amount of debt and was only managing to make minimum monthly payments. I heard of StepChange on the radio one evening and finally gave them a call. They talked through everything step by step with me and helped me set up a DMP, my circumstances changed various times over my repayment period, and I could easily review my income and outgoings online so that my monthly payments went down / up where I needed it. I’m so grateful for what they have done and am in such a better place now thanks to StepChange. Couldn’t recommend them enough to anyone struggling with debt. Reviewed on: 3rd July 2025

You never know what's around the corner.

You never know what's around the corner. We got into debt due to my husband having head and neck cancer. He looked and felt perfectly fit and then the diagnosis hit. He had to give up work and overnight we lost an income. It can happen to anyone. We couldn't see any light at the end of the tunnel and then we telephoned StepChange and it felt like a gentle arm around us telling us they could help.
