absolutely okay until you actually need them! the gentleman I initially spoke with was terrible and left me so worried after being rear ended by a car stolen by the insureds son, it's still not sorted out although after speaking with someone else I feel less worried. Reviewed on: 28th August 2016

Im a new driver and expected to have a hefty first years insurance... I was really surprised on the comparrison sites co-op was right near the top as the cheapest for the year, as they are a well known brand i decided to go ahead and am really pleased. Not great, but not terrible

Their customer service team is good at what they do, what lets them down is accounting. Several times they took two amounts in a month and getting it refunded was a hassle, so am no longer insured through them. Young Drivers Insurance is marvellous!

If you have an eager, young person who has just acquired a drivers license or in fact you are said person, but cannot seem to find a car insurance price which isn't under £2,000 per year? I was in the same predicament and was getting more and more deflated since I did not have that sort of cash, having to take into consideration road tax, MOTs, the car itself and all the other niggly bits that come with owning a car. I found Co-operative Young Drivers insurance a little off putting at first, having a black box fitted to my car which knew my every movement and saw every cockup I made but that was soon washed away when I saw the price, yes I will admit it was still expensive (£1240 p/a, £400 deposit then the rest in 11 installments - around £70 p/m) but after a week of trying to find insurance in every place possible I was willing to stick with it, and the perks seemed rather impressive too, for example every 90 days based on your 'score' (mentioned below), you will be re-assessed to see if your driving has been excellent, good, standard, poor or bad, if you're in the good (all 5/5's) you'll get a discounted premium (after a year my insurance went from £1240 down to £460 and then my renewal came in at £220 - not too shabby if you ask me). The aforementioned black box is a 'tracking device', not any NSA type spy gadgety thing but simply a telemetry collector (like in motor-racing where they track speed, cornering and all sorts). They use this to work out how well you have driven during the day. Say I drove to the local supermarket and back again and the whole journey took 20 minutes, during this time the box is tracking: - My speed and matching it to the roads speed limit (on the online dashboard it will give me a calculation and score out of 5 on how well I have kept to the speed limit and provide hints and tips to improve). - My Acceleration, braking and cornering, probably using the same device as in your mobile phone (a gyroscope) it measures how intense my braking and acceleration is at traffic lights and how well I corner, and if I do it too sharply. (As before it provides an online calculation and score out of 5 on my personal online dashboard with hints and tips on how to improve). - My time of day (at dangerous times) checks what times I am travelling at, so if I keep travelling at night, my score will be lower because it is classed as 'a dangerous time'. This doesn't mean you'll lose your insurance, just basically means you're less likely to get a decrease in your premium because they're worried about that factor. If you have all of them in the green (5/5 score) then when the first 90 days are up expect a nice juicy discount to bounce into your inbox, not only does this incentify good driving style and rewards you for it but it also gives you personal advice on how to get a higher score, giving charts on what days your driving wasn't quite up to scratch, speed maps and loads of other information, it can even give you reminders as to when your MOT is due! All in all, this is a great service and something I would thoroughly recommend, one thing you may have to do, especially at first is to play around with the quoting system, changing some of your options (but NOT lying) can give a nice chunk off of the price. Also try adding parent(s) as additional drivers and stating that they're driving the car more than you are. Happy driving :) Reviewed on: 26th March 2015
