I met staff of Newbury Building Society at Abingdon Air Show and liked the sound of the account which I subsequently opened in branch. The service I received in branch was very good and the whole process was very smooth. Since then I have used internet access which again is very user-friendly (I'm not computer-savvy, so need simple systems!). Reviewed on: 4th January 2018

Far ...FAR!!... too slow to open savings account

It eventually took almost three weeks to open a simple savings account. During that time there was confusing email confirmations from you which led me to believe the account was open, but when I tried to transfer money into the account (using the details YOU provided) the money was returned, as the account did not exist (or was not fully opened?). I then had problems with online access being blocked (twice). The first time I was told it would be sorted and I would be notified (I assumed) the same day. Two days later, and still no access, I had to chase you for a resolution. I then discovered that the password is case sensitive (as they always are) but also the security word was case sensitive (this is very unusual and should be clearly stated at the login screen). I originally applied for the account on 6 February and received a letter confirming the account was open on 1st March. During this time, I was not prepared to wait any longer and opened a savings account with another bank. This was completed, and money showing on that account, within 16 hours (start to finish). I don’t want to hear about the difficulties you have with your 'manual' account handling process. This should be your concern and it should NEVER affect your customers. I suggest you fix it or lose more customers! Conclusion, I have placed £49,500 into a savings account with another bank and only £500 (i.e., the minimum) with you - NOT GOOD!! I wanted to support my local building society, but have serious concerns now. Reviewed on: 4th March 2023

Quick, professional and pleasant

Having come across Newbury BS online, I phoned the Abingdon branch to enquire about opening two savings accounts. An appointment was arranged quickly. The branch itself was welcoming and well maintained with an office for the required privacy to open an account. My consultant (Samantha) was friendly and competent. I knew which accounts I wanted to open, and the process was easy. I was very impressed that all documents were sent to my home address within 24 hours. I hold accounts with a variety of building societies. Based on my own experience with Newbury, I have already recommended opening an account to my husband.
