Cooling-off period? Not so cool!!

Tesco happily accepted my full year payment for car insurance without making it clear that cancelling during their "cooling off period" would incur a significant fee. Yes, it was in the small print, but really? This is disingenuous. Why have a "cooling off period" if you can't change your mind for free? Reviewed on: 19th May 2025

I was grossly overcharged when I changed my vehicle four months into the 12 month contract. the amount I had to pay was even more than if I had taken out a brand new policy. Taking account of the amount I had already paid, and adjusting for the different vehicle, I should have been charged around £60 extra. Instead, I had to pay over £440. This is gross profiteering. STAY WELL CLEAR

Stay well well clear from this absolutely terrible insurance company! Had non fault accident 7 months ago, to this very day my vehicle is still damaged, they have left me with no hire vehicle and the company they use FMG services will give you false and mis-leading information til you loose the plot and give up. My vehicle has been sat at garage since last year xmas, i am now in process of selling it damaged and taking a huge loss. I have complaint to TESCO and FMG with no avail., i pay over £500 a month for this insurance have now canceled it, will never ever use TESCO again and will never recommend to any1. I have voice recordings of call handlers being argumentative and telling lies after lies. Quite possibly the worst experience i have ever had with a company. Tesco auto-renewed my car insurance policy without my consent. I believe auto-renewals should be prohibited by law. Martin Lewis always advises us to compare policies annually, so it’s baffling why auto-renewals are still an option. They should be banned. The policy was also overpriced. When I contacted them the same day to cancel and informed them that I sold the car 10 days ago, they told me I would need to pay a £25.50 cancellation fee.
