Exceptional Service and Mortgage Advice

Our Mortgage Adviser, Anita, was exceptional throughout. She was extremely helpful, responded in a timely manner and really went the extra mile. She is a credit to the Monmouthshire Building Society. The Monmouthshire Building Society have a 'floor' ra...

The Monmouthshire Building Society have a 'floor' rate on their variable rate products that, at the moment, doesn't go beneath 3.5 %. However they have no ceiling rate, so when the interest rates went up exponentially, there was nothing to protect their members. They therefore design their products to protect themselves alone. Potential customers should also know that for a long time preferential rates were offered to new members at the expense of existing members. Should a mutual building Society behave this way? Their mortgage products are all smoke and mirrors, a maze of early repayment fees, product fees, floor rates, set up so that their members will always be disadvantaged. I read the following today: "Monmouthshire Building Society has today (August 20th) published its financial results for 2024-25. The Newport-based Society has announced a 61% increase in profits for the last financial year, up from £2.3million, to £3.7million, and total assets reaching £1.72bn." Well it's no wonder. There's only ever going to be profits for the building society which plays heads I win, tails you lose. If you're looking for a fair building society which operates for the benefit of its members, don't look at the Monmouthshire. Reviewed on: 24th August 2025

Mortgage with Monmouthshire Building Society

I had a mortgage with Monmouthshire Building Society which was coming to the end of its term. I spoke with one of your advisers, Leon Jenkins, with regard to finding a new mortgage product. Leon was totally professional in his advice while at the same time being helpful, courteous and polite. He answered all my questions objectively, clearly and with great patience with the result that I felt reassured that I was taking out the best product for me. Outstanding Mortgage Advice from Claire Oakey

I recently had an appointment with Claire Oakey, and I cannot recommend her highly enough. She was extremely polite, professional, and very patient throughout the whole process. Even though I asked lots of questions and wanted to explore different options, Claire was always accommodating and explained everything clearly. She carefully compared different products, including options with and without fees, discussed reducing the mortgage term, and thoroughly checked my income and outgoings to ensure everything was suitable. I felt completely supported and reassured by her advice. The customer service I received was outstanding — Claire’s knowledge, patience, and professionalism really stood out. Although I had competitive rates from other providers, I chose to stay with Monmouthshire because the service I received from Claire exceeded all others. Highly recommended — thank you, Claire! Monmouthshire Building Society - Mortgages Review

We have been members of the Society for 6 years, and are now seeking to move, home. Claire, our mortgage advisor has been fantastic, and very efficient. I would say that whilst you might not necessarily get the best rates when compared to other lenders, they are still competitive and provide a far more personal service, which is worth more to us than a percentage point. Leon has been brilliant from the start - called me when he said he would, responded to emails, sent me the information required, and explained everything with detail & confidence; making an often difficult and stressful process as stress-free as possible.
