The Nationwide FlexDirect current account pays interest on your money and you can earn cashback on debit card purchases for the first 12 months.

If you’re eligible for an overdraft, the first £50 is interest free. The FlexDirect account has to be managed online or over the phone, not at the branch.

I have held a flex direct account for many years.

I have held a flex direct account for many years. The online banking is easy to use, simple and quick to transfer money between Nationwide accounts and savings products. I feel it is safe and I like using the card reader provided when paying a new payee. Reviewed on: 12th June 2025

Building Society Building Trust With its Members

I have been using Nationwide for years as a student and was then upgraded to the FlexDirect account, I now receive in credit interest that amounts to about 5 pounds a month! This is a nice bonus, but overall the account is very easy to use and has all the functionality I need. The app is great and much improved now you're not required to use a card reader to make purchases online anymore. I also receive the fairer share payments from Nationwide each year where they share their profits with members, which is a nice gesture and makes me keen to stay with them in the future. Simple and quick

A proper building society with a great bank attached

I've had a Nationwide account since the 1980s but my current account was dormant for many years until I came back to the bank a few years ago and opened a Flexdirect account. So glad I did! As well as excellent customer service, the mutual ethos sits well with my values—the deregulation or constitutional loophole or whatever that allowed so many mutuals to convert to banks was at best unfortunate and at worst a scandal. And this is a building society that still believes in branches—no doubt this will change as its customer profile changes over time and online banking wins, but the commitment to continue for now is principled and laudable.
