Review of the Swinton Insurance, Car insurance:

If I could give them ZERO I would

I have used Swinton on and off for the past 25 years so was happy to take car insurance with them in November 2023. In July 2024 we moved house and as you do started notifying change of address. So I dutifully did with Swinton. That's when the nightmare began. Spoke to Toby and explained I needed to change the address only on my motor policy. So he asked all the relevant questions and said he needed to submit it to the underwriters to see if there would be a increase in the premium. He came back and mumbled something about a rejection code as the area was unacceptable. I asked him what he meant by that and he couldn't answer. Now the area I moved to has high end value houses in a semi rural location, certainly not a crime hotspot! He put me on to Lindi who just kept stating the area was unacceptable but I can cancel this policy and they would put me with a new company. Why, I asked? Please tell me why this area is unacceptable? She just kept saying the insurance company stated it was not an acceptable area. I asked her to verify who the insurance company was. AGEAS came the reply. I was stunned. We have a second car, insured by my wife, and she successfully changed the address the day before with no additional premium. It is insured through AGEAS!! Her reply was genuinely incoherent by which time my wife had entered the room curious why I was on the phone so long and started listening to the what was happening. I asked to speak to a supervisor for an explanation. I got Karen. I explained what had happened and wanted an explanation why two people living at the same address received such polar opposite responses. Again she appeared not to understand and stuck to the script of it being an unacceptable area. I recall saying regardless that my wife lives in the same house and that AGEAS accepted she is in an acceptable area (no additional premium) but Swinton say it's not. All she did was keep offering me a new policy with a different company or a cancellation of the policy. I asked for quotes for a new policy with a different insurance company, however her eventual reply was that none would insure me. As my wife was simultaneously obtaining quotations from a comparison website this was obviously another blatant lie. I believe this is the procedure when a customer won't change to another company to build Swinton's revenue stream. They get booted. Needless to say the policy with Swinton is now cancelled. I urge everyone to avoid this company at all costs. I dread to think what may have happened if I had ever had to make a claim through Swinton. Reviewed on: 5th July 2024

No reward for staying

I'm with Swinton, who after sending me a renewal with a hefty increase managed to reduce it significantly after a phone call. I'm happy with the service I receive, but wish that loyal customers were rewarded for staying. Reviewed on: 27th February 2017

poor customer service

This year I was lucky enough to purchase a new car. On informing Swinton I discovered from one of their employees they could not insure my new car. I put this down to the fact it was new with little detail but another insurance company I contacted insured the new car immediately. I cancelled Swinton insurance and the remainder left on the insurance was refunded to my bank account. I was phoned back by Swinton straight away as the individual at Swinton had made a mistake and refunded me too much money. The same individual informed me that there would be some figures appearing on my account but this would rectify the error. I accepted this and understood the situation. This was in November 2016 yesterday 11 January 2017 I receive a letter from Swinton informing me I owed them £25 and this s now being referred to their debt collecting agency but if I want to resolve this immediately I would avoid a £25 admin fee. Understandably annoyed by this I called Swinton and was forwarded to the department dealing with debt. They did not have any details of me and I explained my frustration as I wanted to resolve this situation quickly even though it was a Swinton error initially. It was first suggested I went into my local Swinton branch however I have no idea where that is as my business was conducted online. As this was a new case I was told my fold/case had not arrived with that department and call back in 3 - 4 days. I am so exasperated because:- *the letter I received yesterday was quite strong for a first contact informing me of the money I owe. *I couldn't use Swinton to insure my new car and remain with them *I have to call back in 3 - 4 days to pay the money owed. *I was told to go into my local branch! where is that and why? I initially wanted to remain with Swinton and found it difficult to stay a loyal customer due to the customer service dealing with transferring my insurance to a new car, closing my insurance, paying money owed due to Swinton error, and lack to help just an empty sorry from the poor individual receiving my, calm, explanation of my annoyance. Very old fashioned business model and very poor value for renewals

I joined Swinton due to the cheap price that I was offered and a cash back offer through a cashback website. I was initially shocked that I had to physically post several items to a branch and that the opening hours of the branch seemed to hark back to the 1970's. When the cash back was due to be paid I had to wait for approximately 6 months. They did eventually rectify this after much pursuing from me. They then phoned me when I needed to renew and as I was busy I asked for information to be sent to me. I was told that they would not offer me the best price unless I had a conversation with the woman from the branch so I told them not to renew my policy as I did not like their business practices. Despite this they renewed my policy anyway at around twice the cost that I could get the same policy elsewhere. I will never be using them again even iff they gave away insurance for free. IF YOU WANT TO SWAP THE CAR THEY ADD A NEW FULL YEAR POLICY ON THE TOP OF EXISTING ONE !!! In my case additional £680 ! Don't take the Swinton. Reviewed on: 28th August 2016

Rip off dont use

I am a motor trader and we constantly arrange insurance as a free service for our customers Whenever a customer says they are with swinton we say "oh no not swindle" we have found that without any doubt they have been ripped off we constantly save our customers up to £700 one of our customers was paying over 200 for rac cover, what a joke should be ashamed of themselves.
